How to Cover Popcorn Ceiling Without Removing It

how-to-cover-popcorn-ceiling

The uneven texture on the ceiling is called popcorn or stucco ceilings. Which are often discomfort for many homeowners.

The House Painter in Brampton works on popcorn ceilings, as this style of finish, reduces caulking and sanding.

Textured ceilings are virtual cobweb magnets. It is difficult to clean. It is difficult to paint. Many homeowners would prefer these 1960s lunar landscapes to disappear and covered with a smooth painted ceiling.

In addition to removing the texture or roof, covering this texture with the second layer of roofing is another option.

Popcorn ceiling covers with drywall installation

Popcorn-ceiling-covers-with-drywall-installation

Summary: drywall installed over popcorn textured – 1/2-inch or 1/4”

Description: Since you have already dry wall on the ceiling wall, why not add another coat underneath?

With home remodeling, it’s often easier to covering a problem area than it is to completely remove and replace that area.

Most of the time floors are usually covered with a second coat.

Covering the existing ceiling with dry wall means no worry of asbestos or lead paint often contained in both the texture and the paint.

Cleanliness is a plus, too. Since you’re not removing dry wall, you don’t have to deal with the immense amount of attic insulation, debris, and vermin droppings that rain down inside your home when you take down the gypsum panel.

Advantage

  • Inexpensive – You only need to buy inexpensive drywall and screws.
  • “Skinning” with dry wall is the only cover up option that allows for a smooth ceiling.
  • Of the three concealment methods listed here, this is the one that can the least compromise resale value if you put your home on the market. Because it is a traditional roof type, it will be accepted by almost all prospective buyers.

Disadvantage:

  • Adding another layer of the roof increases the overall weight of the roof.
  • The thicker ceiling makes it difficult to install recessed lights and junction boxes, as their connecting clips often cannot accommodate thicker materials.
  • Dry wall is extremely difficult to install alone without a gypsum panel deck. Half-inch drywall, is still too heavy for one person to handle. You need to get the help of a House Painter in Brampton. Quarter-inch dry wall is lighter but just as difficult to handle. Also, because it’s thinner, it’s more prone to breaking when you handle it.

Cover the ceiling with prepared ceiling wood

Summary: Covering with ceiling wood made especially for this purpose.

The planks are laid on top of screed strips.

Description: Armstrong, better known as a flooring manufacturer, markets its Woodhaven ceiling planks as an alternative to removing popcorn ceiling, among other features.

These MDF ceiling planks are tongue and groove. Like a traditional drop-down roof grid, it keeps all the panels stable and in order.

But unlike a dropped ceiling grid, the grid is not visible.

The plates are attached to the outside of the grill with snap clips.

Ceiling wood planks can be installed directly to drywall, as long as the gypsum panel is flat.

Alternatively, attach a furring slat rack (1 x 2 boards, available at most home improvement centers).

While this allows you to adjust the grid so that it is perfectly level, you will also lose some ceiling height from the extra layer of furring slats.

Advantage

  • The planks fit perfectly.
  • The optional grid system is beneficial if you have a badly warped or damaged roof.
  • This eliminates the need for staining and finishing.

Cons:

  • This system is the most expensive option.
  • Limited availability. You probably won’t find this on the shelves of your local home supply retailer. Usually, it is a special order item.

Cover the ceiling with tongue and groove pine ceiling planks

Summary: Individual natural tongue and groove pine planks purchased from a lumberyard or home improvement store.

Description: As an alternative to expensive ceiling systems, why not install something cheaper on your grill?

This DIY method uses inexpensive lumber found at your local retailer.

Most home improvement stores carry tongue-and-groove softwood (pine or fir, for example) that you can nail directly into furring strips.

Advantages:

  • While roof cover up with tongue and groove pine cannot be considered cheap. The Least expensive option.
  • It allows the greatest variety of styles

Cons:

  • If you do not own a truck, it will be difficult for you to transport the lumber, as it is beneficial to purchase the longest planks available.
  • Long planks are often not perfectly straight and require adjustment to fit into place.

Alternatives to popcorn roof siding

If you’re not interested in any of the cover-up options, there are two methods of remove popcorn ceiling by a painting contractor.

Remove the texture of popcorn

Line your floor with plastic sheeting. Go up the ladder, Scrape the texture off the popcorn. Bundle up the plastic and throw it all away. Paint the ceiling

In a perfect world, it should be that easy, but often it isn’t.

Removing the popcorn ceiling texture comes with its own set of problems.

To begin, let’s assume that the texture contains asbestos. Disposal of even some of this material requires special care.

Hiring an asbestos removal company is expensive.

On the other hand, removing the popcorn is like scraping paint – it is misleading to assume that the easy sections are indicative of the rest of the surface.

One areas are so difficult that you are punching through drywall to remove it.

On the plus side, removing the popcorn gives you the maximum ceiling height. For areas with height issues like basements, where every inch counts, you may want to remove popcorn ceilingthe texture for that very reason.

Removal of the entire drywall ceiling

A completely remove drywall ceiling may be easier, in the end, than trying to scrape the texture and set it so it can be painted.

One reason this may be better is that old dry wall is usually nailed rather than screwed. Many nails will come out with the gypsum panel when you pull it down.

Another benefit: You don’t have to worry about fixing old, gouged drywall.

But you still have the potential asbestos problem in texture.

Removing the entire roof does not reduce the danger of this.
