What is a dividing wall?

A dividing wall designates any vertical wall separating the interior volumes of a building, with the exception of cross walls.

A partition is therefore not load-bearing. To differentiate a partition from a Load Bearing Wall, all you have to do is measure its thickness.

This is generally between 5 and 15 cm, depending on the nature of the materials used and their implementation. Another clue, the sound of the wall: while a wall will sound heavy and muffled by its density, a partition will sound rather hollow.

Types of dividing wall

Dividing wall can be 2 types: fix dividing wall or moving dividing wall.

Fixed dividing wall

They install either by wet installation with mortar or glue or by the Drywall Installation by screwing onto a framework (tools for drywall -plasterboard, honeycomb panels, etc).

By their nature and their implementation, fixed partitions are not intended to be moved regularly. In addition to their distributive function, they can provide thermal and sound insulation of rooms.

The movable or removable dividing wall

They are most often decorative. Easy to install, they can be quickly removed if necessary.

Movable partitions include removable panels, trellises, and adjustable slats. They have no other vocation than to delimit interior spaces without seeking thermal and sound performance.

They tend to damage easily compare to Fixed.

Wet wall or Drywall Installation

Wet dividing wall

How to install drywall

It is not a hard process to install drywall. Here is the step by step guide to drywall installation. which helps make your work easier.

Measure the wall

Firstly measure the wall and cut the sheet to be shorter them 1/4” (6mm) opening. Have someone help you place the sheet firmly against the ceiling and start driving 1-1 / 4” (30mm) screws into the middle of the panel at a suitable height.

Screw the wall

When the first screws are in place, tighten the others, starting in the center of the panel outward. Drive screws at 16”(40 cm) intervals into all studs.

Leave space between floor and partition

There should be a small space between the floor and the partition so that the panel does not get caught against the protrusions of the floor. The plinth will cover it later. If necessary, cut the sheet to leave a gap of 1/2” (12.5 mm). Place the bottom sheet by sliding a lever under the panel to lift it with the foot, and then screw the panel into place.

Temporarily nailing a sheet

A longer wall may require more than one sheet of Drywall. Start by laying a full sheet as before. Temporarily nail it in place, and then drive screws every 16” (40 cm) into the studs.

Consider windows and doors

If the foil covers a window that is not yet installed, cover the window with foil as you did for the sockets. You will cut the opening later with a router and add screws around the opening as needed.

Mark the cut line by placing the edging sheet on the floor and marking where the windowsills meet. Measure between the ceiling and the top of the window to draw the top line.

Outline the door cut in the same way as for a window. Remove the trim, press the piece against the opening, mark the location of the studs, and draw a line for the top of the door. Use tools for drywall saw to make the cuts for doors and windows,

Cut a piece for the corner

Cut a piece of drywall for Installation drywall to cover between the corner and the piece you just installed.

A little piece is smaller than necessary to leave a 1/4” (6mm) gap in the corner. Screw the part into place. At the junction of the panels, cut a V-groove with your utility knife (see box); this will make it easier to hide the joint when laying the tape.

Start at the bottom with a small room

Start at the bottom row with a shorter piece so that the joint in the top row is not directly above the joint in the bottom row. Position the part, lift it with a lever and screw it into place. When the small part is in place, install the longer part.

Cover outside corners

When covering the outside corners, cut the longer piece so that it protrudes beyond the corner, and then trim it with a router or saw after installing it. Lay the adjacent panel, leaving it longer too, and level it to create a tight, snug corner.

Protect corners with metal molding

Protect the corners with a metal corner molding. A slightly long molding may bend when you fix it. To prevent this from happening, cut the molding with tin snips, to remove approximately 1/2 inch (12.5 mm). Press the molding firmly against the ceiling. The screws will deform the molding, so nail it in place, space the nails at 9” (23 cm) intervals.
